HOOPERS FARMING FAMILY

Young people come to the farm to join in selected activities based around farming and life on the farm.  As a working farm, we aim to provide engaging experiences for young people not succeeding in formal education and others who require support to enable them to participate in social and employment environments. Being included in our Farming Family in the calming surrounds of Hoopers Farm and joining in our day to day farm work is proving to be of great benefit to the young people who visit us. Joining in with everyday farm tasks and essential animal care provides varied opportunities for new experiences, team work and social interaction, all of which build resilience.

Our wonderful surroundings, truly rural yet less than an hour by train from central London, provide the perfect backdrop to improve wellbeing. Our visitors soon find themselves immersed in the daily activities of the farm, interacting and looking after the animals and farm environment. This is restorative and encourages a sense of nurture, builds confidence and provides a sense of responsibility and achievement.

Activities are designed around the interests and abilities of individuals and could include:

  • Working with cattle (checking, moving, feeding, calving)

  • Working with sheep (checking, moving, drenching, lambing in season including bottle feeding)

  • Foraging for nuts, blackberries, elderflowers

  • Cooking and making cordials and juices

  • Fencing and stake making

  • Grooming and walking dogs

  • Preparing cattle/sheep for shows & showing

  • Wildflower identification & surveys

  • Vegetable patch

  • Coppicing

  • Hedge planting

  • Machinery maintenance

  • Feeding chickens and collecting eggs
